Rugby: Scotland U18 0-40 Ireland U18

Scotland’s hopes of finishing third in the FIRA-AER under-18 tournament in Grenoble were shattered by an Ireland Schools side that proved dominant in nearly every phase of play to inflict a heavy defeat on the young Scots.

But the result means that fourth-placed Scotland still finish in their highest position and, moreover, means that Scotland will have a more favourable seeding for next season’s tournament.

The game, played in front of a crowd of 15,000, was perhaps a match too far for the young Scots who earlier in the tournament had produced a shock result in the opening round with a 18-17 win over Wales and challenged England in round two before losing 25-12.

“To be honest, we were outplayed by Ireland Schools today. We were yards off the pace and had no go forward about our play. We lost a try and penalty just before half time and that affected us” said Scotland under-18 head coach, Eddie Pollock.

He added: “But, overall, we’ve got to be reasonably happy with what we achieved here in the tournament.”
