RBS Regional Cup: GHA in fine fettle with excellent win at Ardrossan

GHA’s forwards put in a great performance, scoring four of their side’s five tries as they defeated Ardrossan Accies in the RBS West Regional Cup on Saturday.

Indeed, when you delve deeper into the 37-3 victory at Memorial Field on a day when most other matches at this level were called off, it was an impressive showing by GHA.

They had lost at the same ground on league duty back in September while, apart from a Cup defeat to top flight side Ayr a fortnight ago, Ardrossan Accies had been unbeaten at home for over a year.

GHA have now won three from four as they prepare to welcome Ayr to Braidholm in the same competition this
coming weekend.

Paul Harkins (2), Matt Kidd and Chris Landsburgh were the forwards who went over for their tries, while full-back Chris Binnie also got in on the act and Tom Brogan kicked the rest of the points to put GHA top of Group A.

Greenock Wanderers are top of Group B with four wins from five after they edged out Whitecraigs 25-20 at Fort Matilda, while Heriot’s managed to defeat Murrayfield Wanderers 34-24 in the RBS Edinburgh
Regional Cup at Goldenacre.

The RBS Premiership side were given a few scares along the way by the men from the RBS Championship B, who have now pushed Watsonians, Biggar and Heriot’s close in the cup this term.

And the Wanderers players who headed along to a local shopping centre yesterday afternoon to sing carols and raise money for charity can take great pride in the way they have taken to the cup, one of a few clubs who have really bought into the concept in recent weeks.

Skipper Graham Wilson led the way for the home side with two tries, while back-row Jamie Syme also went over for two. Centre Max Learmonth and hooker Stewart Mustard scored their other two tries, with Wilson slotting two conversions.

Alex Cox scored two tries for Murrayfield Wanderers with Chris Hill and Ally Borland also going over and Chris Beattie kicking two conversions.

Elsewhere in the Edinburgh section, Biggar won 39-12 at Haddington which now puts them top of Group 1.
