Rbs Premiership: Currie dig deep for Heriot’s win

Currie captain Mark Cairns hailed his side’s battling qualities after they survived a second half onslaught by Heriot’s to pick up a crucial 19-15 win on Saturday.

Currie went in to their final encounter knowing a win was needed to give themselves a chance of avoiding finishing ninth and a play-off match to stay in the top flight.

And now they must wait and see how Melrose and Dundee HSFP get on in their respective matches this coming weekend to see who will be taking on Hawick in the play-off.

Cairns said: “We knew we had to play well to beat Heriot’s and I thought we did that in patches and then showed real guts when we had to also.

“We have given ourselves a chance of avoiding the play-off and that is all we could do.”

Two penalties by Gregor Hunter and a converted try by Simon Marcel came for Currie in the first half with Heriot’s only having a Graham Wilson penalty in the bag.

Harry Boisseau and Max Learmonth’s tries and a conversion by Wilson helped Heriot’s get back into matters, but two Hunter penalties saw the home side cling on.
