Five minutes later Oban were level with a well-worked converted score from back-row Struan Smith.

The end-to-end and frantic opening did not end there, though, and by the 23rd minute it was 14-14, stand-off Craig Sangster having scored a great solo try for Grangemouth with back-row Andrew MacDougall replying for Oban Lorne.

Four minutes before the break Oban Lorne took the lead for the first time, second-row Jamie McMillan credited with the score, but centre Craig Wright missed the conversion and the interval lead was five points.

In the 48th minute, Grangemouth winger James Denny went agonisingly close to levelling things up, a good run down the right just being halted by the last-gasp defence.

Five minutes later Oban Lorne’s Wright fired a long-range penalty attempt just short and by this stage both sets of players were starting to tire, but were giving it everything. In the 74th minute Wright missed another penalty and the match was still in the melting point.

In the dying minutes Grangemouth pummelled the Oban Lorne line, but the latter held on.
