Phil Burleigh pens new two-year deal with Edinburgh

Phil Burleigh has signed a two-year contract extension with Edinburgh Rugby, keeping him in the capital until the summer of 2018.

The stand-off/centre joined in 2014 after leaving New Zealand side Highlanders.

He has earned 36 caps for Edinburgh during his time with the club and has scored six tries, the last of which came against Glasgow Warriors in the 1872 Cup.

The 29-year-old Kiwi stated his delight after committing his future to Alan Solomons’ side.

He said: “I’m loving my time here, the club’s heading in the right direction under the guidance of Solly [Alan Solomons] and the other coaches so I see a good future for Edinburgh Rugby and I want to be part of it.

“Winning the 1872 Scottish Cup twice now has been pretty big. My first year here I didn’t realise how big it was and this year I really felt the buzz.

“I think we’re building nicely towards our targets in the league this year and the next couple of seasons I see us challenging for more finals.”

Solomons added: “It is fantastic news for the club that Burls [Phil Burleigh] has decided to extend his contract.

“He’s not only a great bloke and good team man but an outstanding and astute footballer.

“He has made a huge contribution to the development of the team since his arrival in Edinburgh.

“I am really looking forward to us continuing to work together as we strive to build on what has been achieved to date.”
