National League: Watsonians go top

RAMSAY Young scored two tries off the bench on his first XV debut for Watsonians as they defeated Selkirk 51-23 to go top of the RBS National League table.

The Edinburgh side headed to Philiphaugh on the back of an opening day win over Peebles and were 18-6 up at the interval.

In an entertaining second half, which saw 50 points scored, they eventually concluded a 51-23 win to leave themselves as the only team in the league with 10 points from 10.

Former Scotland under-18 cap Young, who played for Dundee HSFP last term, led the way for ‘Sonians with his try double, while captain Ben Di Rollo, prop Allan Jacobsen, winger Ewan Miller, full-back Rory Steele and replacement back-row Chris Scott went over.

Di Rollo and replacement Mike Ker shared the kicking points, while stand-off Gavin Craig and full-back Fraser Harkness scored Selkirk’s tries and scrum-half Mike McVie kicked 13 points.

Selkirk skipper Andrew Renwick was red carded for dissent.

Dundee HSFP are second after they edged out Hillhead/Jordanhill 15-13 at Mayfield. The tries for the Taysiders came from Danny Levison and Callum Bowie with Bryce Hosie kicking the other five points.

Tries from Sam Johnson, Andy Rose and Joni Hare helped Boroughmuir defeat Stewart’s Melville 18-13 at Inverleith.

Kelso’s encouraging start continued with a 32-10 win over Biggar at Hartreemill.

In the battle of the newly promoted clubs, Peebles beat GHA 18-14 at The Gytes.
