The flanker suffered an ankle injury early on in Scotland’s opening tour match against Samoa in Durban in June.

Meanwhile, another Scottish forward has been handed a surprise return to the Premiership this afternoon. Former Scotland under-21 lock Ian Nimmo has joined London Irish on loan and goes straight into their squad for today’s Premiership match with Exeter Chiefs.

A promising Scotland age-grade cap, Nimmo joined the Leicester academy as a teenager, and has had spells with the Newport Gwent Dragons and Cornish Pirates, where the 6ft 7in, long-haired and bearded second row became a popular character.

Brian Smith, London Irish’s Australian director of rugby, said: “We are really looking forward to having Ian on board. He will bring plenty of size and experience to our pack.”

• London Scottish forwards and defence coach James Buckland expects to face a fired-up Bristol tomorrow when the two sides meet at the Memorial Stadium. Both teams experienced contrasting fortunes last weekend, with London Scottish ending week one top of the Greene King IPA Championship following a 44-13 win over Ealing Trailfinders, while Bristol lost narrowly against Cornish Pirates.

Buckland said: “They are a Premiership club-in-waiting and have got a very talented and deep squad. It is going to be their first game at home following their loss against the Pirates so obviously they are going to be highly motivated to turn in a performance.”
