Respected sports daily L’Equipe claimed yesterday that the 22-year-old Warriors co-captain had visited Toulon but decided against a move to France, where his brother and fellow international lock Richie Grayplays his rugby, currently with Toulouse.

Jonny Gray, who has 25 caps and has been one of Scotland’s outstanding players of late, is contracted to Glasgow until the end of May 2018 and, according to the French report, has decided to honour that.

A spokesman for Glasgow Warriors said: “It is club policy not to comment on speculation about any of our players.”

Toulon were European champions three years running from 2013 to 2015 and last week announced Saracens and England wing Chris Ashton will join them next season.

Glasgow lost star Fijian lock Leone Nakarawa to Paris club Racing 92 at the end of last season but last month full-back Stuart Hogg, who was out of contract in May, knocked back chances to move abroad and signed a two-year contract extension.
