The centre damaged his hamstring on international duty with Scotland last weekend, having to be replaced after only 12 minutes of the 24-16 defeat by New Zealand at Murrayfield.

Bennett was assessed at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow and, although he does not require surgery, the 21-year-old will now undergo a period of rehabilitation that is expected to last around three months.

“I’m gutted to have picked up this injury and that I won’t be involved on Saturday,” said Bennett, who had already been ruled out of this weekend’s Autumn Test against Tonga but will be at the match in Kilmarnock to sign autographs for supporters.

“However, I’m looking forward to visiting Ardrossan Accies and meeting the kids prior to the game at Rugby Park.”

On a mixed day for Glasgow, head coach Gregor Townsend also strengthened his squad with the addition of Fraser Lyle on a deal until the end of the season.

The Scottish back has been training with the squad over the last few weeks and impressed for the Warriors in the recent A fixture against Edinburgh. The 26-year-old has played for Stirling County, Aberdeen Grammar and also for clubs in Canada.

Lyle said: “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to play professional rugby. I know I have to keep working hard and hopefully I’ll get as much game time as possible. I want to learn from all the players and coaches at
the club and make the most of this move.”

Townsend added: “We’ve been watching Fraser for some time and he’s been in great form for Stirling County this season.

“Fraser trained with us a few times last season and played well in our A fixture with Edinburgh Rugby.

“He has worked extremely hard to earn this full professional deal and he’ll add to the competition in the back-line, increasing our depth primarily at 10 and 12.”
