Hawick 11, Glasgow Hawks 6

An injury-time try by centre Lee Armstrong gave Hawick victory over Glasgow Hawks in the top-of-the-table clash yesterday and, with it, a promotion lifeline for the Greens, writes Alan Lorimer at Mansfield Park.

Glasgow Hawks, by taking a bonus point, are still slight favourites to win promotion. Hawick have one game remaining – against Jed-Forest – while Hawks still have four matches to play which they need to win and obtain at least two bonus points to secure promotion.

Yesterday, in a tense encounter, Hawick, who started without playmaker Rory Hutton, produced the more adventurous rugby and were eventually rewarded, albeit that a draw, after Neil Renwick and Mike Adamson each kicked two penalties, seemed the likely outcome.

Hawks pressed but in the last few minutes, with Hutton coming on to add spark, Hawick gained the advantage and in injury time launched a promising attack that faltered with a knock-on. But at the ensuing scrum they forced a turnover before moving the ball wide for Armstrong to clinch the match.
