Gregor Townsend wants more despite Glasgow Warriors win

Glasgow Warriors got the win they needed when they beat Cardiff Blues 27-20 yesterday to climb up to seventh place in their Guinness Pro12 defence, but Gregor Townsend admitted that the performance was not good enough to challenge the leaders.

“We were three games behind a lot of teams going into this,” the coach said. “We needed to win, and we got another, but we have two very tough games coming up – both at home but still very tough, Leinster and Ulster, both in the top five and Leinster are in fantastic form just now.

“Players and coaches all realise that if we play close to what we did in this match, we won’t win against Leinster. Our accuracy and focus – I was going to say work-rate but that was pretty good – will have to be much better next game.”

He added: “It was a missed opportunity to score more tries, definitely.”

On the Six Nations front, Townsend admitted that centre Alex Dunbar had played only 40 minutes on orders from the Scotland team management, while he singled out Henry Pyrgos, the scrum-half, for special praise after coming through a sparkling hour on his return to action from a wrist injury picked up at the World Cup.
