Scotland international hooker who scored memorable Celtic Park try departs Glasgow Warriors

Forward who starred in 2019 Pro 14 final leaves Scotstoun as second Warriors spell comes to an end.

Glasgow Warriors have announced that hooker Grant Stewart has left the club ahead of the new rugby season kicking off next month.

The 31-year-old brings to an end his second spell at Scotstoun having first made his debut for the club back in 2018. He was part of the side that were defeated by Leinster in the 2019 Pro 14 final at Celtic Park, coming off the bench to score a late try as the Irish side held on for a 18-15 victory.

A statement from Warriors said: “Glasgow Warriors can confirm that Grant Stewart has left the club ahead of the 2026/27 season. Stewart, who came through the senior academy at Scotstoun, made 61 appearances across two spells with the Warriors after making his professional debut in 2018.

“He was part of the team that reached the 2019 Guinness PRO14 Final at Celtic Park, scoring a try in the showpiece occasion, before returning to Glasgow in 2024 for a second spell with the club. Everyone at Glasgow Warriors would like to thank Grant for his contribution to the club and wish him all the very best for the future.”

Former Strathaven Academy pupil Stewart played for Dalziel and Glasgow Hawks before signing his first professional deal with Warriors in 2017. He represented the club 48 times and scored nine tries before departing for Connacht in 2022.

The hooker also represented Scotland at youth level, as well as the Club XV side, and earned three senior caps in 2019. He was named in that year’s Six Nations squad but didn’t make an appearance during Rugby’s Greatest Championship with his debut coming against France in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match in the August.

His next two caps came against Georgia in the following weeks but he was not selected in the 31-man squad to travel to Japan with Gregor Townsend picking captain Stuart McInally plus Fraser Brown and George Turner as his hookers. Stewart played for Ayrshire Bulls in the Super Series after leaving Connacht in 2023, having played just a handful of times, before re-signing with Warriors the previous year.
