Glasgow Hawks 24 - 18 Hawick: Hawks bag edge

Hawks got off to a flyer with a try in the first minute and then a second as they raced into a 12-point lead, writes William Paul at Old Anniesland.

But Hawick gradually pegged them back with two tries of their own, including a length-of-the-pitch effort by winger Greg Anderson after an interception in his 22. Edinburgh pro Gregor Hunter added a couple of penalties before limping off with a leg injury.

Hawks thought winger Ross McClymont had touched down beside the corner flag but he was called back for a forward pass. Then full-back Andy White thought he was over but the referee had already given an offside decision. The Borders team held out to go in at half time with a 12-18 lead.

Both of these newly promoted teams lost their opening Premiership games and were desperate to get points on the table. Last season in the National League they battled out a 16-16 draw in Glasgow, while down in Hawick the home team nicked the game with a late try. .

It was close all the way yesterday with both teams willing to fling the ball about. And it was Hawks who made the breakthrough when veteran stand-off Mike Adamson pounced on a dropped ball for a try which he converted himself.

Then Hawks settled it when scrum-half Patrick Boyer chipped over the defence, caught the ball before it bounced and went in for his second try of the day and his team’s fourth for the bonus point.

Hawick scrum-half Bruce Campbell was sent off for stamping near the end.
