Germany 1 - 1 Italy (6-5 on pens): Germans book semi place

Mesut Ozil had opened the scoring for Germany on 65 minutes after a tight tactical battle, with Leonardo Bonucci levelling from the penalty spot with 12 minutes of normal time remaining. There were no further goals in the additional 30 minutes and the game ended 1-1 after extra time.

But the penalty shoot-out itself would be dramatic as both sides passed up the opportunity to advance before Matteo Darmian missed Italy’s ninth penalty and saw Jonas Hector score to finally settle the contest.

There were some bizarre misses, most notably from Italy substitute Simone Zaza who did a trotting routine in his run-up then blazed the ball over the bar.

Southampton Pelle was another offender. He appeared to tell Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer where he was going to put the ball and then dragged it wide.

Germany defender Mats Hummels said afterwards: “It was unbelievable on the pitch. We had to do our job.

“After we went 1-0 up we had a chance for the second but we lost our security and Italy pressed. We let them play and they equalised. That’s annoying.

“It was a very intense match, not the nicest game to watch. We were always afraid that one situation could change the match. It could be over very quickly.”

Antonio Conte, the Italy manager, said: “I’m proud of the players. They really gave absolutely everything. Everything they could.”
