Exeter v Glasgow Warriors: Ryan Wilson says discipline will be key in Heineken Champions Cup clash

It’s a fresh start for Glasgow this weekend as they swap tough times in the Pro14 for the Heineken Champions Cup.

All the big guns are back for the Warriors and they’ll need them as they face Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park. The visitors, bolstered by their returning Scotland contingent, are taking on the champions of England and Europe.

“Everyone wants to test themselves against the best and from the titles they won last year, they are currently the best,” said Ryan Wilson, the Glasgow captain, who has stressed the importance of discipline.

“It’s exciting to go down there and play a huge team. It’s probably come at the right time for us with all the players coming back. It’ll probably be a very different looking team to what we’ve had over the last four or five weeks

“We need to go down there, execute our game-plan and be disciplined. We’ve killed ourselves recently with our discipline, especially against the Dragons. I think we gave away seven penalties in the second half, which puts us under so much pressure.

“‘When you’re playing against one of the biggest teams in Europe, like Exeter, they’re going to be looking for us to make errors there, so that they can put us back in our 22 and get into the forward play they’re so good at.”

Discipline hasn’t always been a strong point for Wilson this season, as a yellow card against Munster proved. But in his defence, the Warriors skipper was not the only offender - he was just the only one who got caught, with both ref and TMO failing to spot some Munster skullduggery.

“I did sort of think: ‘Right, I’m going here but at least someone is coming down with me’,” said Wilson of his sin-binning for going in late on opposition scrum-half Craig Casey.

“I’m not too sure what the TMO was doing. I’m not too sure what any of these TMOs are doing, especially with the international stuff, Jesus. They’ve got a job to do so they need to pay attention. They’re probably falling asleep in these vans – they need to stay awake and make sure they keep watching the game – but it is what it is. The ref did what he could, he obviously didn’t see anything.”
