Ex-Glasgow stand-off Gregor Hunter goes back to Gala

The news is a boost to the Maroons’ new coaching team of Chris Dalgleish and Opeta Palepoi as they get plans in place for pre-season while Hunter will also be working as the club’s youth development officer.

The 24-year-old came through the ranks at the Netherdale club all the way to the first XV before he was snapped up by Edinburgh on an academy contract six years ago.

The ex-Scotland under-20 cap went on to play 16 matches for the Edinburgh first team before suffering a bad knee injury in 2013.

He was then released by the capital side in 2014, but joined up with the Warriors only to injure the same knee again.

“That was in the summer of 2014 and it was very frustrating, but I used my time out injured at the Warriors wisely and tried to get as much coaching experience under my belt as I could,” Hunter said.

“Last season I turned out a couple of times for the Warriors first team and had quite a few matches for Glasgow Hawks in the BT Premiership.

“I was released at the end of the season and I wasn’t quite sure what was going to be next, but when the opportunity came up to play at Gala and work as the youth development officer I jumped at it.

“Under the new coaching team the boys are keen to put in an improved showing next season and I am looking forward to running out at Netherdale again.

“The youth development officer post is also exciting and it will be good to get out there in the community and coaching.”
