Edinburgh Accies move to fifth place in Premiership

BACK-to-back wins have taken Edinburgh Accies into fifth place in the Premiership, giving the Raeburn Place side not only a great chance to avoid a play-off, but an outside chance of a top four place and a slot in next 
season’s British & Irish Cup.

Dundee may have lost out in the Mayfield mudbath, but their losing bonus point dropped Currie into the play-off position.

The game produced five tries but it was the Edinburgh side who defended better and just about deserving a thrilling win.

The home side took the lead in eight minutes through lock Richie Hawkins, who was carried over by his pack. Stand-off Jack Steele added the conversion.

Accies hit back with two unconverted tries by lock Tom Drennan and winger Nyle Godsmark to lead 10-7 at half-time.

They pushed further ahead in 43 minutes when hooker Michael Liness surged over and Ruaridh Bonner converted to make it 17-10.

The sides exchanged penalties before a try by flanker Danny Levison, converted by Steele, appeared to have swung the momentum the way of Dundee, only for Accies’ Bonner kicking a second penalty ten minutes from time to seal the win.

Dundee director of rugby Ian Rankin said: “It was a great game in very difficult conditions. Accies defended superbly, but we’ve got one more chance against Stirling County.”

Accies can now approach their game against relegated Boroughmuir with confidence in a bid for an escape which did not look possible in February.
