The Sons, who had only beaten Raith three times in their previous 17 meetings, almost went a goal behind after three minutes when Chris Johnston slipped the ball wide to Ross Mathews. But his first-time ball was clipped into the side netting from 12 yards by Declan McManus.

Dumbarton, with just one win in 11 games, raced to the other end and one minute later Mark Docherty’s cross was met by Donald McCallum, but his flashing header was just off the mark. The home side created three other terrific first-half chances, for Sam Stanton, Darren Barr and Robert Thomson but to no avail.

Rovers, unbeaten against Dumbarton in seven clashes in the past two years, had a great chance before the break but Chris Johnston’s turn and shot from close range was blocked by Gregor Buchanan.

Gary Locke’s side had Cuthbert to thank again in 67 minutes when the keeper blocked brilliantly with his legs from Thomson, after McCallum had put the striker through on goal.
