Drop-goal hero Duncan Weir hopes to kick on

DELIGHTED Duncan Weir last night claimed Scotland had revealed their true selves in a second-half display against Italy which ended with a last-gasp winning drop goal by the stand-off.

The Glasgow Warriors player said: “It’s obviously a great feeling now, the squad has a good buzz about it.

“We have a good job now against France, coming back to a sold-out Murrayfield. We can hopefully show glimpses of what we did in that second half.”

After two comprehensive defeats to Ireland and England, the Scots dug in to beat the Italians in Rome thanks to Weir’s 40-yard drop goal inside the final minute. The win will not only lift the team ahead of the visit of France in two weeks’ time but it will take some of the pressure off coach Scott Johnson who is due to move into the director of rugby role when New Zealander Vern Cotter joins as head coach in May or June.

Weir’s heroics were only possible after a brace of tries from centre Alex Dunbar. The product of Annan RFC scored twice from long range afterthe Scots had failed to cross the line in any of their previous four Tests.
