Currie 15 - 48 Glasgow Hawks: Impressive Hawks win

IF there were any doubts that this will be a difficult season for Currie then yesterday’s match supplied the evidence as Hawks scored seven tries in an impressive performance of all-round skills, writes Alan Lorimer at Malleny Park.

Hawks ability to dominate the scrums, use their forwards as effective runners and their confidence all ensured that the Anniesland men were always in the ascendancy and it was only brave defence from a young Currie side that prevented a points avalanche.

The visitors made their statement of intent in the opening minutes of the game with a tap penalty try from scrum-half Paddy Boyer and, before half time, had added tries by centre Jack Steele, and No.8 Ross Miller for a 24-10 interval advantage, Currie having achieved one touchdown by winger Harvey Elms from a clever move.

Currie, without sin-bin resident Joe Reynolds, then conceded a further try as Findlay Gillies finished off a lengthy spell of handling. Hawks, having bagged their bonus point, continued their relentless pressure with Boyer scoring his second try and winger Hadden McPherson crossing for his side’s sixth touchdown.

Teenage Currie full-back George Horne, who had earlier kicked a penalty and conversion, supplied some consolation with a late try but, in a final flurry, James Gormley got Hawks’ seventh try.
