Clamour for Rugby World Cup tickets starts

Prices for adults range from £15 for low-profile group games up to £715 for the best seats at the final at Twickenham.

The cheapest seats for England, Wales and Ireland matches are £50, but Scotland fans will only have to pay £20 for the category D tickets against Japan and the USA.

Scotland open their campaign against Japan at Kingsholm on 23 September next year then face the USA four days later at Elland Road. The Scots go on to meet South Africa at St James’ Park on 3 October and Samoa at the same venue on 10 October. The cheapest adult tickets for both those games are £50, with prices rising to an eyewatering £175 and £150, respectively. Tickets for children are available for £15 for all Scotland games.

England Rugby 2015 have to raise £250 million from tickets to cover the cost of the tournament and pay the International Rugby Board £80m under the hosting agreement, meaning the average ticket will cost around £100.

Organisers say almost a quarter of all tickets will be under £50, however.

An England Rugby 2015 spokeswoman said: “We have worked hard to create as many low-priced tickets as we can – and prices start at £7 for children and £15 for adults. Over half a million tickets will cost £50 or less – but it is a balance as ticketing revenue is our only revenue stream to fund the tournament.

“The pool stages of the tournament will have a much lower average price than the knock-out stage of the tournament, where prices are generally higher.”

There will be a ‘traffic light’ indicator system on the ticket website – which can be found at www.tickets.rugbyworldcup.com – to show which matches are receiving a lot of applications and are likely to go to ballot.
