British & Irish Cup: Carmarthen 20 - 17 Dundee HSFP

Dundee HSFP’s losing streak in the British and Irish Cup continued with a narrow loss at Carmarthen Quins.

It was a much-improved performance, helped by the inclusion of Glasgow Warrior’s Fraser Gillies, Ruaridh Jackson and Taylor Paris. But Dundee came up short thanks to 15 points from the boot of Jack Maynard and a neat try from James Dixon.

Carmarthen took the lead when Dixon expertly entered the line and eluded the cover-defence to score. Dundee responded with a sharp converted try from full-back Brandyn Laursen.

Ill-discipline allowed Maynard to edge the home side ahead before the impressive Jack Steele converted his own score. Another Maynard penalty close to half-time left the game poised at 14-11.

The second-half was as brutal as the first. Dundee will be ruing a lack of execution which should have seen them win. Repeated infringements undid a number of promising periods of play and kept Carmarthen in touch.

A Steele penalty was cancelled out by two from Maynard, to level the scores at 17-all. With five minutes left, Maynard slotted his fifth penalty to sink the visitors.
