The landmark decision, taken by the Rugby World Cup Board, reflects governing body World Rugby’s commitment to developing the women’s game.

The sport has experienced record growth in recent years, with women and girls now accounting for 28 per cent of the global playing population.

The next women’s edition of the Rugby World Cup takes place in New Zealand next year and will be the last one to feature 12 teams.

Scotland still harbour hopes of reaching the 2021 finals but must get through a European qualifier featuring Italy, Ireland and the winner of the Women’s Rugby Europe Championship.

The qualifier was postponed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions and no new dates have been announced as yet.
