Ayr 12 - 48 Watsonians: Second-half surge

Watsonians took control of this game from the start and, apart from a ten minute spell midway through the first half, when Ayr contrived to lead 12-10, never let their hosts into the game. Six tries to one tells the story.

Maul power produced the opening try for hooker Ross Graham in six minutes. Then, when Ayr illegally halted another advancing Watsonians’ maul, Andrew Chalmers goaled the penalty. Back came Ayr, however, Frazier Climo bursting over for try, converted by Scott Lyle, before skipper Pete McCallum pirated Watsonians’ ruck ball and sprinted clear for an unconverted try to put Ayr in front.

As the half ended, Rory Hutton danced home to restore the visitors’ led, before Chalmers’ second penalty goal made it 12-20 at the break.

The second half was one-way traffic, Rory Drummond burst over for two tries, then winger Ally Davidson sprinted clear for two more, Chalmers converted all four and, for the first time this season, Watsonians had won back-to-back matches – and deservedly so.
