The Autumn Nations Cup is only one round of fixtures old but it already seems that Scotland are doing battle for top spot in Group B.

The Scots survived a scare on the opening weekend of the inaugural tournament when they travelled to Florence to take on Italy on Saturday 14 November.

Gregor Townsend’s side weathered a storm in the first half and were trailing 14-7 in the early stages of the second before finally overcoming their hosts.

Two late tries from Scott Cummings and George Turner flipped the tie on its head and saw Scotland escape with a bonus point in a 28-17 win.

Scotland will want to replicate that second half performance from the off when they do battle with France, who find themselves topping the table without playing a game.

That’s because their first round opponents Fiji recorded positive Covid tests on the eve of their match on Sunday 15 November. France were awarded a 28-0 victory in light of the outbreak.

It also means Fiji won’t play any part in the scheduled group games as players isolate in accordance with Covid-19 regulations.

Scotland are likely to win the group if they can beat France.
