Rugby: Thompson poised to make switch to Glasgow

EDINBURGH Rugby look set to lose rising star Jim Thompson to rivals Glasgow next season.

Speculation about a move along the M8 for the 25-year-old has been rife recently. As a full-back, the move would allow Thompson to challenge Chris Paterson, who has just signed a contract extension with Edinburgh, for a place in the Scotland side. When the suggestion was put to Glasgow coach Sean Lineen in his capacity as mentor to Scotland A, who visit Italy A tomorrow, he refused to confirm or deny the transfer.

"There are a few things that will be coming out in the next couple of days with players. It's been an interesting couple of months with players and goings-on," said Lineen who was more forthcoming about what Greig Laidlaw will bring as skipper in Biella.

"Greig's a lad I have been really impressed with, a fantastic attitude and he has kept Mike Blair out on a number of occasions through his quality of play."
