Rugby: Southern hemisphere tweet could be in offing for Visser

Scotland rugby coach Andy Robinson has given the green light for record-breaking Edinburgh winger Tim Visser to play his way into next summer’s southern hemisphere tour party.

The come-on for the flying Dutchman came during a question and answer session with Scotland fans on the social networking site, Twitter, where all dialogue must be conducted in less than 140 characters.

Asked if he would consider taking Visser, who is understood to become eligible on residency after the opening Test, against Australia on June 4, Robinson makes clear he could be in the frame for a cap in subsequent matches against Fiji and Samoa.

“Tim qualifies in June and yes, if fit, he will be considered for the southern hemisphere tour,” said Robinson who fielded questions ranging from “what do you do to relax before a big match?” – “I go for a run with my wife” _ to “what has been the highlight of your time in charge of Scotland?” – “The two wins in Argentina are a real highlight and beating South Africa after losing to New Zealand last autumn.”

The innovative scheme also saw Robbo defend his substitutions policy in the face of a question why he made pre-ordained changes.

“Sorry it seems that way, however, all subs are either tactical or physical, ie for injury and fatigue,” he said.

An insight into tactics came when Robinson was asked how vital quick possession is in Tests. “Yes, quick ball is vital but needs to be over seven or eight phases. (It) puts pressure on defence and puts attack on front foot.” replied the ex-Bath flanker.

With typical honesty Robinson conceded that one aspect of Scotland’s inability to reach the quarter finals of the recent world cup for the first time remained a concern.

“Still having nightmares about lost restarts, they were very costly,” said the coach who also hinted at using the forthcoming Six Nations to plan ahead by blooding young talent.

Invited to name any young players who had caught his eye so far this season, he said: “Been delighted with young players for Glasgow and Edinburgh i.e Denton, McInally, Hogg, Weir, Leonard, Gilchrist, Harley” . . . then the coach quickly added: “and Matt Scott.”
