Rugby: Ross Rennie ready for return

Any Scottish rugby post-Six Nations blues may be about to be partially eased with the impending return from injury of World Cup flanker, Ross
Rennie.

The absence of the 26-year-old was, arguably, the biggest blow to interim coach Scott Johnson in plotting the campaign, as, without an out-and-out ball winner, he had to use Kelly Brown outwith his natural position.

While Brown coped admirably, the sight of Rennie preparing to return for Edinburgh – possibly tomorrow night at home to Ulster in the RaboDirect PRO12 League – will be a particular boost, especially with a summer tour to South Africa on the horizon.

Rennie hasn’t played for Edinburgh since the October clash at home to Scarlets but was included by Johnson in a pre-Six Nations camp as an indication of how much he is valued.

Speaking then to the Evening News, Rennie said he was getting through by drawing on experience gained when out longer term earlier in his career. “I have learned how to manage things. You want to train with the guys as fast as possible, as it is a lot more fun that training yourself in the gym.”

As for a comeback date, he predicted “loosely” around the end of February.
