Rugby: Plenty for Pringle to work on with 'Muir table toppers

Boroughmuir coach Fergus Pringle still has plenty to work on in terms of discipline and defence, despite seeing the Meggetland men maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a 41-21 win at home to West of Scotland.

While the victory featured a feast of attacking play, 'Muir displayed worrying frailties in defence. In addition, they conceded a hefty tally of penalties and had three players yellow carded.

Pringle's side led 10-0 at the interval before clicking through the gears to finish with a haul of seven tries. Steven Ruddick bagged a double and there was one apiece for Derek O'Riordan, Freddie Lait - in his final appearance for the club before moving to New Zealand - Tom Bury, Ross Samson and Jamie Doubleday, who took his try tally to three in as many games.

Watsonians finally secured their first league point of the season but the Myreside men had to settle for a narrow defeat bonus to break their duck after going down 23-20 away to Selkirk. Duncan Finnie and Sergiu Ursache had a try apiece, while Mike Ker contributed the rest of the points with both conversions and a brace of penalties.

Edinburgh Accies maintained their unbeaten start to the Division Two campaign when they posted a 27-10 win away to GHA. Two tries from Jamie Sole and one each from Accies captain Iain Berthinussen and Scott Jeffers together with three conversions and a penalty for Stuart Evans moved the Raeburn Place men to the top of the table, one point ahead of Gala.

Accies' impressive start to the campaign is in sharp contrast to near neighbours Stewart's Melville, who accompanied Accies in taking the drop from the top flight last season. StewMel were on the road to meet Biggar and returned nursing a 41-21 defeat that leaves them at the foot of the table.

The sides reached the break locked at 10-10, but the Inverleith men suffered a second-half collapse on their way to a third successive loss. Tries by Ross Grant and Mike Crawley, plus 11 points from Stuart Ker's reliable boot, accounted for the StewMel points.

Meanwhile, in Division Three, Haddington kick-started their centenary season when they bounced back from an opening day defeat to see off Dumfries 16-9 at Neilson Park. The boot of Ross King proved the key as he slotted three penalties and the conversion of a try by skipper Neil Watt.

Musselburgh faced Howe of Fife at Cupar and the Stoneyhill men succumbed 24-9. Two penalties and a drop goal from Brian Walls kept 'Burgh in the game at 12-9 down as the sides turned round. But the Fifers clicked into gear in the second half to record a comfortable win.
