Rugby: Muir star Jamie has made a splash since leaving Bath

Former Bath Academy prospect Jamie Doubleday has been highlighted as a key performer who can keep Boroughmuir flying high at the top of the Premiership as a home clash with Stirling County looms at Meggetland tomorrow.

Doubleday shows versatility by switching from flanker to No.?8 in a team which has Rob Cairns in for injured winger Tom Bury (shoulder).

And Boroughmuir coach Phil Smith is convinced that student Doubleday will continue to shine after notching four tries in as many outings, all won, this season. "Jamie is reaping the benefits of having had his first full pre-season programme with us," said Smith. "He arrived last year keen to step up from university rugby and was immediately included among the substitutes for our seconds.

"However, before he could step on the pitch Euan Matheson was injured warming up for the firsts on an adjacent pitch at Heriot's and Jamie was promoted. Within ten minutes he was off the bench, fully involved, and has never looked back. Not only is Jamie a clever reader of the game but he can put tackles in wide out and carries the ball well so there is a lot more to come from him.

"The teams we have faced are, in reality, occupying positions they are likely to be in all season. But that has given us the chance to blend and develop a bit of confidence with some potentially harder tests ahead."

Getting a first start in the back row tomorrow is ex-Scotland under-20 back row Andrew Rose, of whom Smith said: "As grounds get softer Andrew is going to come into his own. He is a real mongrel of a player, good at messing up opposition possession." Spearheading Stirling from the stand-off position will be Stuart Edwards, son of former 'Muir captain, Henry.

At Goldenacre, Heriot's entertain Melrose with only one change from the side that lost at Ayr. Replacing Edinburgh signing Struan Dewar at No.?8 is ex-Scotland sevens captain, Mark Lee. All eyes will be on Max Learmonth as the centre aims to be among the tries for the fourth successive week.

Coach Bob McKillop said: "Max is improving with every game, and had his best game yet for us at Ayr. He has not played much at outside centre in recent seasons but with help from (assistant coach) Mark Appleson is growing into the role." For Currie, a trip to Selkirk means a chance to post their first win at the fifth attempt after two draws. Matt Scott returns at stand-off and Edinburgh's Andy Turnbull is on the wing with Tom Brown moving to full back.

Referring to a late equaliser last week coach Ally Donaldson admits: "We got out of jail .?.?. silly mistakes are costing us."

Even a draw has proved beyond Watsonians who make two changes for a crucial trip to West. Captain Alan Nash returns to the squad with Richard Minto out with a shoulder injury and, up front, Ed Hunter and Craig Owenson are in for Donald Seed and Ross Turner at second row and prop.

In Division Two, Edinburgh Accies take their 100 per cent record to Kirkcaldy, while Stewart's Melville are at Gala.

Musselburgh head for Dalziel in Division Three with Haddington entertaining Whitecraigs.
