Rugby: Mixed fortunes for Accies

EDINBURGH Accies could not repeat Saturday's fine sevens showing at Gala as they were knocked out in round one at Earlston yesterday.

On Saturday, the Raeburn Place men reached the final of the Gala Sevens having seen off Kelso, Watsonians and Edinburgh University on the way. There they went down 33-10 to Melrose despite tries from Tom Drennan and Tom Brown.

However, yesterday at the Earlston Sevens, Kelso got revenge for their first-round loss 24 hours earlier by defeating Accies at the same stage. Watsonians followed up Saturday's quarter-final place with a first-round defeat at Earlston to Selkirk. Haddington too lost in round one to the hosts meaning that Stewart's-Melville were the only Capital side to reach the last eight at The Haugh after seeing off Hawick YM first up.

In the quarter-final they fought hard against Melrose but the Borderers were too strong.

Melrose collected 20 points at the weekend by winning both Gala and Earlston events with only Jed-Forest's tournament left this coming Saturday.

The Reds 10 won the Edinburgh Tens at Raeburn Place on Saturday. Hamilton won the plate event.
