Rugby: Lasswade put Marr to the sword in Shield first round

Holders Lasswade progressed to the second round of the National Shield on Saturday with a surprisingly comfortable win over Marr.

The Midlothian men defeated the National Three leaders 42-10 at Hawthornden to set up a tie away to Caithness this Saturday.

Linlithgow also made it through to round two, defeating Livingston 12-0 away from home, while North Berwick got the better of Ross High in an East Lothian derby, coming out on top 24-13.

The match between Ross High and North Berwick also doubled up as a National Three encounter, North Berwick now fifth with Ross High still stranded at the bottom. Lasswade, Linlithgow and North Berwick are the only three local sides definitely through to round two of the Shield after Preston Lodge and Murrayfield Wanderers dropped out after losing to GHK and Greenock Wanderers respectively.

Edinburgh University's away trip to Waysiders Drumpellier was postponed.

RHC Cougars had to battle hard to see off Langholm 24-18 in a rearranged National One match.

The victory puts them in eighth place and crucially leaves them 11 points clear of the drop zone.

And in National Three, Forrester took a losing bonus point from a 12-7 defeat at Gordonians, leaving them in eighth.

Dunbar won 19-18 at Earlston in East One, while Leith saw off RDVC 22-11 in East Two.
