Rugby: Lasswade clinch thriller

Lasswade and Edinburgh University played out a cracking contest on Saturday, with the former coming out on top to stay ahead of the pack in National One.

In the only match played in that division at the weekend, the teams were evenly matched for most of the first half at Hawthornden, only a try by Dougie Grant seeing Lasswade edge ahead.

The Midlothian side stepped things up a gear after the break and scored four tries with the pick of them coming when Richard Borthwick ran 50 metres to touch down. Neil Clark also kept his fine season going with a nice chip-and-chase try.

Of the 34-16 victory for the leaders, Lasswade president Ian Barr said: "Edinburgh University are one of the better sides in the division on their day and they never gave up so it was pleasing that the guys got another win under their belts."

In National Three only three matches beat the frost.

Preston Lodge kept up their promotion hopes with a 15-10 win over Ross High in a typically tight East Lothian derby.

North Berwick lost out 17-12 at home to GHK, while in the other match runaway leaders Marr beat Orkney 43-3.
