Rugby: Lasswade back on top as last-gasp kick breaks Wanderers' record

Lasswade became the first team to beat Greenock Wanderers at home in two and a half years on Saturday as Gavin Brown's last-gasp penalty put the Midlothian men top of National One. The 17-16 win over their promotion rivals at Fort Matilda saw the hosts fight back from 14-3 down in the 75th minute to lead 16-14 heading into injury time.

In the first half, Lasswade built up an 11-0 lead with a try from Gavin Sharp and two penalties from Brown and it could have been more had they not squandered a couple of try-scoring opportunities.

Heading into the last five minutes, Lasswade were 14-3 up, but after a second Greenock penalty their pressure paid off with a converted try. Their kicker Kenny Diffenthal then knocked over a long-range penalty to give them the lead.

Lasswade did not panic though and, with the referee playing additional time, one of the home defenders crept offside to give Brown the winning kick from 40 metres.

In East Two, Gala YM leapfrogged Broughton into top spot after they won 55-0 at Walkerburn.
