Rugby: Jacobsen is Edinburgh’s player of the month

Edinburgh Rugby have bestowed a fresh accolade on Allan Jacobsen after the venerable prop forward, 33, was named “player of the month” for November.

During the month Jacobsen appeared three times for Edinburgh against Treviso, London Irish and Racing Metro, winning on every occasion.

More recently he returned to the side after being rested for the visit to Munster and equalled colleague Andy Kelly’s appearances record in the Rabo Direct Pro 12 League with a 125th outing and could surpass that total in the Boxing Day derby with Glasgow at Murrayfield.

Not only has the 60 times capped internationalist, known throughout rugby as “Chunk”, proved typically resilient in the scrums but his abilities around the pitch have also been noted.

Chunk was singled out by national television pundits for his extraordinary ball-carrying in the remarkable 48-47 win against Racing Metro. Additionally, team-mate Roddy Grant revealed later that Jacobsen had been instrumental in getting up quickly in defence to charge the late drop goal attempt from which Racing attempted to snatch victory.

Edinburgh coach Michael Bradley later paid tribute, saying: “Chunk was one of the guys, along with Esteban (Lozada), who carried the fight to them (Racing) in the last 20 minutes. He seemed to have more energy in that game the longer it went on. He did his job playing well for Scotland in the World Cup and came back to put his head down with Edinburgh. He is a pleasure to work with.”

Previous award winners this season are wingers Lee Jones (September) and Tim Visser (October).
