Rugby: Hughes heaps praise on all as ’Burgh pip Wanderers

Musselburgh coach Brian Hughes praised both his own side and Murrayfield Wanderers for a great game of rugby after his charges managed to edge the encounter 13-5 in RBS National One.

Hughes felt it was the best his team had played all season and they had to be on top form on Saturday to beat a Wanderers side who have showed in patches what a good outfit they are.

The victory was Musselburgh’s 15th from 16 league matches and leaves them five points clear of Hawick YM who they travel to face this coming weekend in what should be another cracker.

Musselburgh’s points came from a well-worked try by James Murray and the rest came from the boot of Dave O’Hagen.

Hughes said: “I thought it was an excellent match with both sides working very hard and playing some good rugby. When the team lost to Dunfermline just before Christmas it was a shock to the system, but the way they have responded has been top class. They are training with real purpose and they needed to all be on their game to win this one.”

Elsewhere in the division at the weekend Linlithgow lost 36-0 at Hawick YM, while struggling Livingston were humbled 96-3 at Kilmarnock.

Edinburgh University Blues were edged out 10-9 at Garnock, Dunfermline won 22-6 against Langholm and RHC Cougars’ trip to Ellon was postponed.
