Rugby: Graham Marshall is new coach at Heriot's

Heriot's have filled a rugby coaching vacancy by announcing former Scotland back row Graham Marshall will take charge of their forwards next season.

The 51-year-old PE teacher, originally from Currie, won four caps between 1988 and 1991 and has latterly enjoyed tremendous success boosting age-group rugby in Selkirk where he took the local Youth Club team to three Scottish under-18 finals, winning in 2003.

A successful mentor of Selkirk High School's rugby team, Marshall also helps coach Scotland under-18s.

In taking over the reins from Bob McKillop, who has stepped down for family and business reasons, Marshall will link up with backs guru Mark Appleson who hails the arrival, saying: "I cannot wait for our pre-season training to start at the beginning of July.

"Graham is a real development coach who will fit in well at Heriot's.

"We also go back a long way having got to know each other when I was playing for Headingley and he had a spell with Wakefield before returning to Scotland.

"Coaching-wise there has been a slight overlap in that many of the lads I have coached with Scotland Under-17s would then step up into the Scotland Under-18s under Graham's charge."

Marshall was also a key figure in Selkirk's promotion to Premiership Division One in 2008 and his expertise is bound to be missed at Philiphaugh.

Meanwhile, Scotland Under-20s have made changes to their starting side ahead of tonight's IRB Junior World Championship match against England in Treviso.

Heriot's Glenn Bryce switches from the wing to full-back following the citing and suspension of Stuart Hogg for a high tackle in Friday's defeat by South Africa and Kerr Gossman come on to the wing from the bench.

In the forwards, Mitch Eadie and Hamish Watson come in as a straight swap for Jamie Swanson and Alex Spence in the back-row.

England beat Ireland in their opening match.
