Rugby: Gavin Hastings saddened by death of Duncan Paterson

FORMER Scotland captain Gavin Hastings today paid tribute to international scrum half and team manager Duncan Paterson who has died, aged 66.

Paterson, from Galashiels, was a familiar figure at Murrayfield both as a player who won 10 caps and later managed the side in both the 1991 world cup, when a semi-final place was achieved, and in South Africa four years later.

Hastings said: "Duncan became a very good manager and was terrific in 1995. He wanted the best for the team always.

"When I was captain in the South Africa tournament there were a couple of times I went to him with issues on behalf of the players and asked for his support which, to his credit, was always forthcoming."

Mr Paterson, uncle of Scotland's record breaking full back, Chris, was widely regarded as a visionary administrator while, of his playing career, three caps were gained in wins over England.
