Rugby: Edinburgh students safely negotiate their first Shield tie

Edinburgh University battled hard to defeat Waysiders Drumpellier on Saturday and progress in the National Shield.

The students won the delayed round-one clash 26-17 and will be hoping now to embark on a run like their one in 2009 when they claimed the Bowl at Murrayfield.

On Saturday they had built up a 14-10 lead over the National Two hosts at Langloan, centres Rory Jones and Andy Mackereth scoring tries with stand-off Max Morgan converting them.

In the second 40 minutes they stretched their advantage to 26-10 through tries from full-back Michael Johnson, one from winger Callum Wilkinson and a further conversion by Morgan.

In round two of the Shield Linlithgow won 33-6 at Helensburgh.

Murrayfield Wanderers, on league duty in National One, were defeated 33-28 by bottom club Irvine. The result leaves the Capital side in relegation trouble.

Forrester lost out 26-10 in National Three at Hawick Linden leaving them in eighth place eight points above the drop zone.
