Rugby: Donaldson full of praise for fighting spirit of champions

Currie coach Ally Donaldson has hailed the never-say-die attitude of his players after the Premiership champions recorded their third draw of the league campaign - this time with a 38-38 scoreline at West of Scotland.

The Malleny Park men staged an unlikely second-half revival after reaching the break 28-5 in arrears, eventually grabbing a share of the spoils with late converted tries from James Johnstone and John Cox - Ryan Wilson had earlier touched down twice, while there was one score apiece for Matt Scott and Johnny Smith who also landed four conversions.

"The guys showed great character to come back after a disappointing start due to individual errors," said Donaldson, "We still scored six tries to four away from home despite too many people performing blow par."

Heriot's also overturned a half-time deficit, albeit a small one, to bounce back from the previous week's defeat and post a 20-17 success at Hawick. The home side led 6-3 as the teams turned round, but the Goldenacre outfit battled back and tries by Cammy Ferguson, Max Learmonth and Jamie Syme plus five points from the boot of skipper Graham Wilson saw the Capital men through.

After losing their unbeaten record the previous week, Edinburgh Accies rediscovered the winning habit when they posted a 25-14 victory at Kelso in Division Two. Michael Liness, Greg Campbell and Gavin Douglas had a try apiece for the Raeburn Place men, while Stuart Evans landed two conversions and two penalties.

Accies' conquerors seven days earlier were Peebles, who welcomed Stewart's Melville. The Inverleith men pushed the hosts hard but had to settle for a narrow defeat bonus point as the Borderers emerged as 21-15 winners.

Musselburgh moved out of the bottom two in Division Three when they returned from their trip to face Cartha Queens Park with a 31-23 win to their credit.

However, there was disappointment for Haddington when they were beaten 24-15 at home to Hamilton.
