Rugby: Currie pip Melrose to throw open the Premiership race

Currie blew open the Premiership title race when they battled to a gutsy 22-18 win over leaders Melrose at Malleny Park on Saturday.

The defending champions reached the break 15-14 in arrears, with their points coming from tries by Matt Scott and Dougie Fife, both converted by Hayden Abercrombie, who landed a penalty before Ross Weston bagged a crucial touchdown to give Currie a 22-15 lead. And they held off a late flourish by the visitors to record a win that keeps them in contention for the silverware.

Boroughmuir's match at Dundee High was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

In Premier B, Watsonians cranked up their bid to secure one of the four available slots in the top flight when they eased to a 37-5 win over West of Scotland. Jamie Forbes and Andrew Skeen accounted for four of 'Sonians' six tries, with a brace apiece as the Myreside men chalked up a 37-5 success to sit atop the division on points difference from Edinburgh Accies.

Accies returned from their trip to meet Peebles with a 27-3 win under their belts. After leading only 3-0 at the break, coach Simon Cross saw his men step on the gas to see off the only side to record a win over Accies this season. Tries by Greg Campbell, Gavin Douglas, Jamie Sole and Josh Pequeur secured a bonus point that has moved the Raeburn Place men a step nearer to a top flight return.

Stewart's Melville continued their upturn in fortunes with a 34-29 success away to Premier C leaders Hillhead/Jordanhill - the first away win of the season for the Inverleith men. Scott Riddell, in his second game since returning to the club, was on the score sheet again with a try, but the hero was Nick McCashin who touched down twice and kicked the other points.

In Division Three, Haddington lost 19-6 at home to Perthshire, with Ross King accounting for the Scarlets' points, while Musselburgh were beaten 46-11 away to Hamilton - skipper Andrew Cook touching down and Brian Walls booting the rest.
