Rugby: Currie happy to have been drafted pro pick Young

Currie have finally got their man after landing Edinburgh prop David Young in the draft attaching Scottish professional players to clubs on an ad hoc basis for the new Premiership rugby season.

Ally Donaldson, coach of the champions who start at Melrose on Saturday, said of the 25-year-old Kirkcaldy reared prospect who re-crossed the border to join Edinburgh last season: "David was doing pre-season training with us a few years ago when he was offered a contract by Leicester.

"One reason for the pick is that he has been at our club."

Loyalty has been a criteria even though the system does not guarantee availability and leaves coaches balancing fielding a full-timer against de-motivating one of those whom they normally rely upon.

"It can be a case of biting somebody's hand off when offered an experienced player's services, or it can create a bit of a dilemma," admitted Donaldson who added: "It helps when you are calling on players who are familiar around the club.

"For example, Ben Cairns started out in the senior game at Currie where his brother, Mark, is a key player.

"Also, although Andrew Easson is coming back from injury and Andy Turnbull will be away at the (Commonwealth Games) sevens they have served us well in the past."

New to the Currie stable are flanker James Eddie and his A international stand-off colleague Ruaridh Jackson, both Glasgow.
