Rugby: Broughton cruise into semi-finals

The men from Wardie defeated visitors Liberton 19-0 after the pitch survived an inspection due to the freezing cold  temperatures.

The hosts started the stronger and took the lead through a penalty by Robert Malcolm. Liberton then missed a penalty to tie things up before Malcolm kicked his second penalty of the day to give his side a 6-0  half-time lead.

After the break, Broughton had a lot of possession but could not turn it in to more points and kill off the tie.

That was until 15 minutes to go when they did manage to break down Liberton’s defences with Mark Morgan going over for the try. The forward then added his second of the match soon after, and at 16-0 they had a foot in the last four.

Malcolm sealed a 19-0 win with his third penalty of the match.

Joining Broughton in the semi-finals will be Leith and Moray House.

On Saturday, Leith defeated RDVC 24-0, while Moray House got the better of Walkerburn 31-5. The St Boswells-Penicuik tie did not go ahead.

In the RBS Edinburgh  Regional Shield, only one match went ahead with five ties falling foul of the cold weather.

The one game that was completed saw RHC Cougars  defeat Trinity Accies 29-14 at  Bangholm leaving the victors top of Pool Four with three wins from three matches played.
