Rugby: British Army claim silverware

The British Army dominated the men’s elite event at Rugby Rocks Edinburgh on Saturday, eventually defeating 
Newitts Centurions in a pulsating final at Boroughmuir’s Meggetland ground.

On a day when the weather was kind for once, hundreds of rugby players gathered for a full schedule of matches, and from the off it was clear that the British Army, with a number of skilful Fijians in their ranks, were the 
favourites.

Newitts Centurions, a team with links to the Darlington Mowden Park club in England, did push them hard in the final, however, before the Army’s pace and power saw them home to lift the silverware.

In the elite plate event, the Storm 7s came out on top while in the men’s open event, including a number of Scottish teams, there were some good tussles between squads full of players from the RBS leagues. However, it was the Godfathers, a team formed at Exeter University, that eventually emerged as winners.

Meanwhile, in the plate event it was the Samba 7s, featuring players such as Stewart’s Melville’s Seb Trotter, who picked up the silverware.

Autograph hunters were also well served with Scotland players such as David Denton and Ruairidh Jackson spotted amongst the healthy crowd.
