Rubiano surges to stage six win in Giro

CYCLING: Miguel Angel Rubiano was a clear winner of the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday as Adriano Malori claimed the leader’s pink jersey. Colombian rider Rubiano (Androni Giocattoli) was one minute and ten seconds ahead of the chasing pack, as he finished the 207-kilometre trek from Urbino to Porto Sant’ Elpidio in a time of five hours, 38 minutes and 30 seconds.

Malori (Lampre ISD) finished second to claim a 12-second bonus and the leaders’ jersey as he topped the general classification above Michal Golas (Omega Pharma-Quickstep), Garmin Barracuda’s Ryder Hesjedal and Rubiano.

The 27-year-old Rubiano’s victory earned him a 20-second time bonus whereas Garmin’s Tyler Farrar and former world champion Thor Hushovd were forced to abandon before the mountaintop finish at Rocca di Cambio.
