Round-up: United battle back for win

Manchester United staged yet another second-half fightback to avoid crashing out of the FA Cup to npower League One opponents for the second-successive season.

Southampton threatened to repeat their famous 1976 Wembley win over United when Richard Chaplow gave them a half-time lead against the Barclays Premier League leaders. But the introduction of veteran Ryan Giggs helped change the game, with goals from Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez putting the visitors into the last 16.

Stuart Parnaby and Kevin Phillips were the heroes as Birmingham came from two goals down to beat local rivals Coventry 3-2, while Robert Pires' first goal for Aston Villa helped them continue their dominance over Blackburn in cup competitions with a 3-1 triumph at Villa Park. Villa's other scorers were Ciaran Clark and Nathan Delfouneso with Nikola Kalinic netting for Rovers.

Crawley Town's FA Cup run continued with victory over Torquay in a fiery tie that included two red cards, two penalty saves and, crucially, a winner from Matthew Tubbs. Shane Long hit a late winner as Reading ended Stevenage's FA Cup run, with a 2-1 away win.

Rene Gilmartin's error from Ashley Barnes' first-half strike was enough to hand npower League One leaders Brighton a 1-0 victory at Championship outfit Watford.

Eddie Howe's first home game in charge of Burnley ended in a 3-1 home win over Burton Albion.

Swansea captain Alan Tate put through his own net in the 88th minute as Leyton Orient won 2-1 in Wales. Three goals in ten second-half minutes eased the pressure on manager Alan Irvine as Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to beat League Two side Hereford United 4-1.
