Rose blossom in second half to draw with Spartans

THE top match in the Dechmont Forklift League Cup last night was the clash between Spartans and Linlithgow Rose.

Both sides have been playing some great football so a special game looked in prospect and it was Spartans who took the show to the Scottish Junior Cup winners and took the lead with a goal from the experienced Kenny Young.

Mark Cowan then added a second to give them a 2-0 interval lead. Chris King pulled a goal back for Linlithgow and, in a spirited fightback, Scott Wilson scored a second for the Rose to give them a 2-2 draw.

Tranent stole the show in their match against Premier League side Penicuik with a late flurry of goals to win 3-2.

Penicuik had taken a two-goal lead in the first half through Keith Barr and Ryan Gay, but in a ten-minute spell in the last quarter- Tranent scored three times through Steven Tait, Mel Graham and Richard Miller.

Haddington lost 5-1 at home to Musselburgh, who had several trialists on display.

The Musselburgh goals came from Mathu King with two, Andy Porteous, Mattie Doherty and a trialist. Stevie McDonald scored a consolation goal for Haddington.

Bonnyrigg were at Dunbar and came away with a narrow 3-2 win. On the scoresheet for Bonnyrigg were Sean Grady and Scott Devlin with a double. Dunbar's goalscorers were Callum Hill and Geoff Jones.

Stoneyburn played host to Super League side Bathgate but lost 2-0 with two second-half goals. Stevie Payne opened Bathgate's account before Alex Lurinski added a second from the penalty spot. Stoneyburn had a chance to pull a goal back with a spot kick but Mark Lunn in the Bathgate goal produced a super save.

Boness had another narrow win in their section, this time a 3-2 victory at home to Edinburgh. Chris McFadyen with a double either side of a Rodger Duffin strike was enough to give them the points, with Limbuth Katezla and Dean Thornhill getting the city side's goals.

Whitburn were at Broxburn, who they will face in the Premier League this season, and the going got tough with a 4-1 demolition by the Albyn Park side.

Franny Mahon scored for Whitburn before John Millar drew Broxburn level just before the break. Chris Geddes put Broxburn ahead just after the break with further goals from John Jeffreys and Barry Craig.

Pumpherston lost 3-0 at home to Newtongrange, with a trialist grabbing two and Sean Woodburn adding a third.

Armadale beat West Calder 3-2 thanks to goals from Robbie Feeney with a double from the spot and Ryan Johnstone. David McLeod had given West Calder a lead at the break.

Elsewhere, Sauchie beat Livingston 1-0 and Blackburn had a good 2-1 win at Harthill thanks to a winning goal from manager Mark Campbell.
