Roger Federer shakes off early rust to make semi-finals in Estoril Open

TENNIS: Roger Federer recovered from an erratic start to beat Arnaud Clement 7-6 (6), 6-2 yesterday and reach the semi-finals of the Estoril Open. Federer will play defending champion Albert Montanes, after the fourth-seeded Spaniard defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3.

Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez advanced after Alberto Martin retired with the score at 6-0, 2-0.

There were upsets in both of the women's semi-finals, as Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain overcame second seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 6-4, and Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia rallied to beat No7 seed Peng Shuai of China 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-3.

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic saved a match point before pulling off a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over world No1 Serena Williams to reach the final of the Italian Open. Williams, playing her first tournament since winning January's Australian Open after a knee injury, squandered match point while leading 5-4. The American also blew a mini break in the third-set tie-break.
