Robson sorry for offensive remarks about female players

LAURA Robson has apologised for making disparaging remarks about her fellow players in a recent interview.

The 16-year-old former Junior Wimbledon champion made the comments in an article in July's edition of Vogue magazine. Robson, who is regarded as British tennis' brightest hope said in the interview: "Some of the tennis girls, they're sluts. They go with every guy and make such a bad name for themselves – and you don't want to be known for stuff like that. You want to be more discreet."

The remarks were widely reported and Robson, who is expected to be given a wild card for the senior Wimbledon draw, quickly claimed the quotes had been taken out of context.

The WTA have requested a transcript of the interview and Robson has now issued a full apology.

"Firstly, I would just like to say a big sorry to anyone that I may have offended in an interview published recently," she said in a statement released by her management company Octagon.

"I made a totally inappropriate, throwaway comment without considering the consequences. I still have a lot to learn both on and off the court, and clearly I need to be a lot more careful about how silly remarks may come across when taken out of context.

"I live for tennis, have many good friends in the game and I would never want to do anything that could hurt the reputation of a game I love. I will learn a lot from this and now just want to focus on my tennis."

The WTA welcomed Robson's apology, saying in a statement: "Laura did the right thing by apologising and we're glad she showed the maturity and good judgment to do so.

"She is a 16-year-old girl and this was her first major interview with the press. It's never easy for a 16-year-old girl to answer questions about her private life and the lives of other players. The WTA Tour is confident that Laura has dealt with this properly and that she'll successfully move beyond it. We look forward to seeing her back on the tour."
