Robbie Renwick adds bronze and record to gold medal haul

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick, already a winner of the 200m and 400m freestyle, ended a great four days by setting a Scottish record of 49.53 secs in taking a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle at yesterday's British Gas ASA National Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Thanks to his early week efforts, the 22-year-old had already qualified in the two longer events for the World Championships in Shanghai next month and he will now also double up in the British line-up for the freestyle relays.

Windsor's Simon Burnett won the 100m final in 49.09, with Loughborough's Grant Turner also finishing ahead of Renwick in 49.53.

Scot Kris Gilchrist, who claimed a World Championship qualifying time in the 100m on Wednesday, added a second title with victory in the 200m breaststroke, an event in which fellow countryman Michael Jamieson will be carrying the British colours in China. Jamieson, who won both the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the first round of trials in Manchester in March, skipped these championships leaving Gilchrist to easily take the title in 2:10.16 and by more than three seconds ahead of Richard Webb.

Warrender's Lewis Smith, who won the 400m individual medley, added another medal with a silver in the 200m event. City of Cardiff's Xavier Mohammed took the gold in 2:021.09 with the Edinburgh 22-year-old just snatching the silver from Adam Harrington in 2:02.42.

Rebecca Adlington, who missed the recent British training camp in Cyprus due to illness, confirmed her return to fitness before the World Championships by collecting her second title of the week.

Winner of the 800m final on Thursday, the double Olympic champion added the 400m in a comfortable 4:08.32, more than two seconds ahead of Sheffield's Ellie Faulkner.

Hannah Miley, the Scot with the best chance of a medal in Shanghai, cruised through the morning heats of her favourite 400m individual medley in 4:41.57. But the Garioch 21-year-old decided to pull out of the final and so left City of Leeds' Anne Bochmann to claim the ASA title in 4:47.00.

In the 200m butterfly, Jemma Lowe, another medal hopeful for both the World Championships and next year's London Olympics, set her second Welsh record of the week with an impressive 2:05.36 in the 200m butterfly. She finished over five seconds ahead of Elena Sheridan and is now ranked No 3 in the world.

Andy Mayor, who swam for Scotland at last year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, finished fourth in the 50m butterfly won by Jack Marriott.

The championships were the final trials for the World Championships and seven Scots have met the selection criteria - Miley, Renwick, Gilchrist, Jamieson, David Carry, Caitlin McClatchey and Jak Scott.
